Self-Esteem and Confidence

When a child exhibits ADHD-like symptoms, such as difficulty focusing, restlessness, or trouble staying on task, visual attention could be the root of the problem. If their eyes aren't working together properly, their brain has to work harder to focus, which can lead to fatigue and distractibility. This visual strain can make it challenging for the child to concentrate on tasks like reading or homework, causing behaviors often mistaken for ADHD.

Classroom Behavior

When a child struggles with visual attention, it can greatly impact their self-esteem and confidence. Difficulty focusing during classroom activities, like reading or following along with lessons, may make the child feel as though they’re falling behind, even though they are capable. Over time, this can lead to frustration and a belief that they are not as smart as their peers, causing a drop in confidence. 

Academic Performance

When a child struggles with visual attention, it can lead to frustration and difficulty staying engaged in tasks like reading or writing. This often results in acting out or being disruptive, as the child may feel overwhelmed or unable to keep up with the demands of the classroom. They may avoid tasks that require sustained focus, leading to behaviors that are misinterpreted as defiance or hyperactivity. 

The underlying reason for poor visual attention in many children is often due to binocular vision deficits, where the eyes don’t work together properly. These deficits can make it difficult for a child to focus visually, leading to challenges in areas like reading comprehension, handwriting, and other academic tasks. When the brain is overworked trying to keep the eyes aligned, it leaves less energy for understanding and completing schoolwork, causing struggles that are often mistaken for attention problems or learning disabilities.

  • Good attention during preferred tasks (e.g., playing or watching TV)

  • Difficulty staying focused on tasks, especially reading or homework

  • Frequent fidgeting or restlessness during close work
